a day in the little virtual school…

November 16, 2012

Here is the rundown of what is involved in doing virtual school and how we balance outside activities with work at home. Wednesday is our busiest day but also my favorite because we get out of the house and away from the computer.

Lily gets up, breakfasted, dressed etc. by 8 am. We are on a block schedule (by choice) so on Wednesdays she does all her history lessons for the week plus reading and writing, which she does every day.  She has time to work on these lessons for a couple hours in the morning and again after lunch; they take about 3 hours to complete.

Mid-morning she has a Class Connect (live meeting on the computer with her class) that lasts for 30 minutes.

Then we head out of the house for a class at our local park called Tales and Trails. If you have read my blog before you may have seen me mention Wild Things and Growing Up Wild–classes at the park for the preschool set. Tales and Trails is next stage before the homeschool classes for older kids that the park also offers.

Next we either eat lunch at the park or go home for lunch, which is largely dependent on whether she has a conference with her teacher that day (Lily has a conference with her teacher one Wed. of every month). If she is up to it we join the small group session, implemented in the same manner as Class Connects but with only 3-4 students. She then uses this time to finish her lessons or do some supplemental learning activity if she is finished.

Later that afternoon we head out again to go to her dance class.  Her dance class is at a community center that also has a library on site so we try to visit there once she is finished.

We get home around dinner time. Afterwards she gets to spend her time how she wants to until time for bed, which is around 9.
